A Youthful Saint Reading (c.1512-1525). Girolamo da Santacroce (Italian, active 1516; died 1556?. Oil on poplar, transferred from another panel. National Gallery, London.

This work is a panel from an altarpiece, of which ‘A Saint with a Fortress and a Banner’ is also a part. The saint reading is sometimes identified as Saint John the Evangelist. This picture is probably an early work by Gerolamo da Santacroce, and the style is derived from the late works of Giovanni Bellini.
